Most of the time in a home is spent in the living room. Friends come over and sit down. Kids sprawl on the floor. Long chats go on late. It's also the room that shows your taste the most.
You probably spend a lot of time on the furniture, the art and the lights. Don't forget the floor. A living room carpet changes how big the room feels, how it sounds and how it feels when you walk across it. Hard floors like wood or marble look great, but they can make a big room echo. A good luxury rug fixes that. It brings the furniture together and makes the room feel warm.
So what should you look for? Pure materials, strong build and a design you won't get tired of. Machine-made carpets often use synthetic yarn and glued backing, and they tend to go flat after a while. A handmade rug is a better bet. It's made with old handloom methods, from fiber you can trace back to its source. Saraswati Global is a weaver and direct-to-trade supplier. We bring Indian weaving skill into homes around the world, and we make bespoke living room carpets that people remember.
The Artistry of Handcrafted Construction
Some rugs are made for a quiet drawing room. Others have to survive a busy family lounge. How a rug is built decides which one it suits.
Hand-Knotted vs. Hand-Tufted Floor Art
Hand-knotted rugs and hand-tufted rugs look alike from a distance. Up close, they're built in completely different ways.
Take the hand-knotted rug first. It's slow work. An artisan sits at a wooden loom and ties each knot onto the upright threads, one at a time, thousands of times over. Nothing gets glued, and there's no canvas on the back, so the rug can breathe. It can go for professional washing when it needs it. And it can stay in a home for fifty to a hundred years. If you're after one rug to keep for life, this is the one. It looks right in a main living area, a formal room or a private library.
A hand-tufted rug starts with a handheld tool. The weaver pushes loops of yarn through a canvas, and then the back is sealed with cloth and latex glue. It feels thick and soft underfoot. Some have carved patterns you can run your hand over. It's quicker to make, so it's a good fit for a casual sitting area or a media room.
Then there are hand-woven rugs and flat-weaves. They're thin and light, and either side can face up. Because they lie so flat, they slide under low doors and heavy furniture without a fight. Think busy walkways and summer sitting rooms.
Material Excellence: Selecting Natural & Performance Fibers
You feel the yarn every time you walk across a room. It also decides how a rug deals with stains, and how it looks when the light hits it.
Wool and silk rugs put two fibers side by side, and each one covers for the other. High-altitude New Zealand wool carries natural lanolin, so spills and dust tend to sit on top rather than sink in. Mulberry silk is fine and glossy. It catches the light from your windows, and the color seems to shift as you move around the room. That's what makes classical palmettes and abstract designs stand out.
Cotton rugs are soft, light and breathable. They keep their color clean. Use them in casual sitting areas, breakfast nooks or any room that doesn't get a lot of foot traffic.
100% RPET rugs are made from used plastic bottles. The fiber repels water and resists stains, so they're easy to wipe clean. They work well in busy family areas, sunrooms and covered patios.
Highlighting Signature Collections & Design Trends
Pick a carpet that fits your home, and the whole room looks put together.
The showpieces are dazzle collection rugs. Raw hand spun New Zealand wool is juxtaposed with shiny silk, and the designs incorporate subtle urban hues and break free from the structured, geometric forms. They're daring, and they add some movement, depth and shine to a contemporary drawing room.
If you are a fan of order, then try geometric rugs. An open space is structured with clean lines, crossing angles and a regular grid. They complement basic designs and glass panels.
Transitional rugs are based on old Oriental patterns, but toned down with single-tone colors. Many are faded and have borders that are purposely worn. They sit in-between traditional wall adornment and contemporary furnishings.
Nowadays, carpets are based on watercolor-like prints, gentle patterns, and neutral grids and lines. They will fit in perfectly in open living areas, rooms with a floor-to-ceiling glass.
And then classic rugs, with their detailed center medallions, palmettes and traditional borders. In a formal library, or older house, they appear as though they always have been.
The purpose of this is to provide a sense of scale and proportions for 9X12 and 10X14 layouts.
People make the largest mistake about size. A rug that is too small ends up under the coffee table, divides the room and makes it look smaller.
A standard living room typically calls for a 9X12. The front sofa legs, sectional and armchairs are on the rug and a strip of bare wood remains along the walls.
Have a big great room or an open living area? Go up to a 10X14. All legs on a large sectional fit and the coffee table and side chairs fit. The entire seating area becomes one comfortable, welcoming area.
The purpose of the Adjoining Zones Across the Floor Plan is to coordinate the adjoining zones across the floor plan.
Your rooms don't have to match. A home feels better if you have different textures in the rooms that are in close proximity to each other rather than the same texture all the way through.
Start with the bedroom. Put a soft rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed – it feels great the first time you step out of bed.
If you are looking for kids room rugs for your nursery or family room, choose non-toxic rugs which shed little, if at all. They are soft, safe to play with, and are easy to keep clean.
Round rugs are great for an entry hall, a curved nook or under a round side table. They take the edge off sharp corners and they softly guide people through a room.
Sustainable care and preservation for luxurious textiles
A handmade carpet does not require much. Some basic lifestyle changes are sufficient.
Vacuum using a suction only vacuum. Turn the beater bar off. When spinning brushes can snag the yarn, pull the silk and fray the edges.
Blot spills fast. Use a fresh clean dry white cotton towel. Avoid rubbing as it will drive the liquid further into the pile and twist it.
Use a rug pad. A thick, breathable, non-slip pad will cushion your steps, protect the floor and prevent the rug from shifting.
Have it professionally cleaned. Have it hand washed by a specialist in natural fibre every 3-5 years. This drains out the accumulations of the deep dust.
Turn it around. Turn the rug 180 degrees every six months, this will help to wear it out evenly and not let the sun fade on one side.
