Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has come forward to defend cricketers from the 1990s after Mohammad Hafeez made comments questioning their impact. Hafeez suggested that since that generation didn’t win a World Cup, their contributions weren’t as significant. However, Inzamam strongly disagrees.
Inzamam’s Strong Response
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Inzamam responded to a question about Hafeez’s remarks. While he admitted he hadn’t heard Hafeez’s exact words, he insisted that Pakistan cricket owes a great deal to the ’90s players.
“The players who succeeded after the ’90s were actually part of that era,” Inzamam pointed out. He described the 1990s as a golden period for Pakistan cricket, saying that many modern cricketers built their careers on the foundation set by that generation.
Pakistan Cricket’s Struggles & Leadership Issues
Beyond defending his fellow ’90s cricketers, Inzamam also raised concerns about Pakistan cricket’s current decline. He blamed poor leadership and management decisions for the team's underwhelming performances in major tournaments.
- 2023 ODI World Cup: Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals, winning only four of nine matches.
- 2024 T20 World Cup: A shocking early exit after losing to the USA and India, failing to make the Super 8 stage.
According to Inzamam, Pakistan cricket needs better planning and decision-making at the top. He warned that if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) doesn’t learn from its mistakes, the team will continue to struggle on the international stage.
What’s Next for Pakistan Cricket?
Pakistan cricket is at a crossroads. With major tournaments ahead, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the team needs to rebuild and refocus. Whether they can turn things around will depend on strong leadership, smart strategies, and learning from past mistakes.
