What Oud Attar Actually Is
Oud comes from the heartwood of Aquilaria trees, found across South and Southeast Asia. Most Aquilaria trees never produce oud. Only trees infected by a specific mould develop the dark, fragrant resin that makes oud possible. That resin soaks into the wood over years, sometimes decades. The resulting material is then distilled to produce oud oil.
This rarity is why oud commands the prices it does. High-grade oud oil is among the most expensive fragrance materials in the world. The global agarwood market runs into billions of dollars annually. When you buy an authentic oudh attar, you are not buying a synthetic approximation. You are buying the real distilled oil.
Types of Oud and How They Differ
The region where the Aquilaria tree grew determines the scent profile of the oud. This is not minor variation. It is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable.
Hindi oud, sourced from Assam and nearby regions of Northeast India, is rich, complex, and deeply animalic. It is an acquired taste, but one that rewards patience. Cambodian oud is sweeter and fruitier. Many people find it more immediately wearable. Indonesian oud tends to sit between the two. Vietnamese kyara is the rarest and most revered grade, with an extraordinarily refined scent profile.
Arabic oud, or arabic attar, often refers to blends that combine oud with rose, amber, musk, or tobacco. These are the attars most widely known in the Gulf and Middle East. They are more complex and layered than pure oud.
